If you sell holiday cookies, you already know: parents go absolutely crazy for Elf on the Shelf. Every December, moms are up at midnight desperately searching for a fresh elf idea — and they will happily pay for one that looks adorable in a photo.
That is exactly why the Elf Painting Backer belongs on your holiday cookie menu. It is a personalized 5×7 staging card that makes it look like the family’s elf painted a cookie overnight — featuring a drawing from their kid, printed right onto the cookie with an Eddie. It photographs beautifully, it is personal, and it costs you almost nothing to produce. That is a high-margin holiday add-on, baker to baker.
What It Is
My Elf Painting Backer Card is a printable 5×7 staging card in an adorable buffalo-plaid design that reads “I painted a cookie just for you!” The concept: the child’s drawing gets “painted by the elf” overnight, printed onto a white-iced square cookie with an edible ink printer. Stage the cookie on a mini easel with a tiny paintbrush tucked into the elf’s hand, prop the backer card behind the scene, and the parents get a core-memory photo for their feed.
There are two versions in the shop: a generic version ($4.99) that works for any customer, and a personalized version ($7.99) customized with the buyer’s elf names — the baker emails a customized PDF within 48 hours. That personalized version is your upsell.
How to Offer It
Sell the cookie and the card as a set: one square “painted” cookie, the backer card, a mini easel, and a tiny paintbrush, all boxed up and ready to stage. Parents get a done-for-you elf scene; you get a premium-priced product built from supplies that cost pennies per unit.
- The upsell: offer the personalized version at checkout. Collect the family’s elf name(s) at order time, then email the customized PDF within 48 hours — that is your turnaround promise.
- Pricing: I suggest $12–15 for the set — the cookie, the printed card, the easel, and the brush. The personalization step takes you minutes, so nearly all of it is margin.
- No edible printer? Offer a paint-your-own version instead: a blank white-iced cookie plus an edible paint palette, and the kid paints their own masterpiece. Same backer card, zero tech required.
What You’ll Need
Your baker’s supply list — everything linked below:
- My printable Elf Painting Backer Card — the buffalo-plaid “I painted a cookie just for you!” scene (available in the shop, in generic and personalized versions)
- Square cookies — cut with the 3″ cutter from this 3-piece square cookie cutter set (2.5″, 3″, 3.5″), flooded with white icing for a blank “canvas”
- Mini paintbrushes — this mini paintbrush set — tuck one into the elf’s hand; it sells the whole illusion
- Mini art easels — this mini tabletop easel for your display piece, and mini easels in bulk when you are making dozens — much cheaper per piece
- Edible paint palette set — this edible paint palette set with brushes for the paint-your-own version; just add water, like real watercolors
- An edible ink printer (optional but magical) — I use my Eddie printer to print the child’s actual drawing right onto the cookie
Marketing It to Parents
Here is the playbook, baker to baker:
- Stage it and shoot it. Set up the full scene — elf, easel, cookie, backer card — and post that photo on social media. This product sells on the photo alone; parents need to see the magic to want it.
- Take pre-orders in November. Open ordering before the December rush so you can batch your personalization PDFs (remember that 48-hour turnaround) and order your easels in bulk.
- Bundle it. Mention that it pairs with any Christmas cookie order — it is the perfect add-on at checkout when a customer is already buying a dozen decorated cookies.
